The location of Sümeg Fortress was chosen strategically, at the crossroads of several important trade and transport routes. The fortress was established before the Tatar-Mongol invasion and remained an impregnable stronghold for nearly 150 years. After the city of Veszprém, the seat of the Hungarian kings, fell to foreign invaders in 1552, Sümeg Fortress became a refuge for the Veszprém episcopate for two centuries.
In the 18th century, the city began to grow around the fortress. During this time, the Bishop’s Palace and the stone Church of the Ascension were built. Today, the fortress houses a historical museum, featuring a medieval torture chamber and a fascinating exhibition of wax figures.
