Leaving Budapest in the morning, your journey takes you along the northern shore of Lake Balaton, where the road often runs right next to the water, offering stunning views of the shimmering lake and its picturesque landscapes.
Your first stop will be Tihany, a place of truly unique natural beauty — so much so that it became the first protected nature reserve in Hungary. According to legend, when Queen Anastasia, daughter of the Russian prince Yaroslav the Wise and wife of King András I, arrived on the peninsula, she said, “How quiet it is here,” giving the place its name, Tihany (meaning “quiet”).
Here you’ll visit the Benedictine Abbey, founded in the 11th century. In its lower chapel lie the tombs of King András I and his wife. Surrounding the abbey is a charming village with cosy cafés - a perfect place to relax and take in the atmosphere.
During your walk along the hillside with its spectacular lake views, don’t miss the chance to test the famous Tihany Echo - a natural phenomenon that can repeat several quickly spoken words!
After exploring the peninsula, a short drive will take you to the lovely town of Balatonfüred, the oldest resort on Lake Balaton. In the 18th century, it became the first spa town on the lake and is now considered the “Mecca of Hungarian sailing.” Stroll along the scenic promenade and enjoy the sight of countless white sails gliding across the blue water - especially enchanting in summer.
